Since I lost my job, I decided to tare out the paneling upstairs and repair the plaster that was under it. A lot of people told me to just hang up drywall over it, but I had read things that some plaster wouldn't be able to support the weight of the walls. And for some reason, I really like the smooth look of the plaster. So I tore it out. It took me one night to tare it all out. I thought it looked better already!! Since they had used glue and nails to put up the paneling, there were huge chunks of plaster missing. Glue was all over! I came up with the brilliant idea of sanding it all off. So we went out and bought a belt sander and a bunch of belts and I started sanding down the wall.
After a couple hours, a couple packs of belts and about 2 feet on the wall, I realized that:
- I was putting huge chunks in the wall
- I wasn't going anywhere and I was taking forever to get there
- I was sanding down lead paint
So I quit sanding and broke out a putty knife. (This is on Sunday... And I still hadn't finished 3 feet of the wall when I was supposed to be done by Monday.) I was prying and scraping glue off like crazy. Monday came and left and I hadn't even finished the hallway yet... TWO AND A HALF WEEKS went by and I finally finished scraping the glue of the walls... Good thing I had plenty of time to work on it since I didn't have a job.
I then had to patch all the holes. I had to fill them with dry wall compound and then let it dry and then fill it again since the dry wall compound contracts when it dries. Once I had filled it all in, Kim painted. We put two coats of primer and three coats of paint, just to be sure. We cleaned the carpets and tried to clean the curtains... That didn't go over too well. They fell apart in the wash machine. So we got some new ones as well. Check out the before and after below.
